What do you need to connect to the DFW Freenet Free Wireless Network?

First, you need a computer/laptop that has a wireless (Wifi) card (802.11b/g). If your laptop is less than 5 years old, it probably already has this capability built in. If you have a laptop without a wireless card, but live near one of our wireless locations, let us know and we may be able to provide you with one. Most desktop computers do not have a built in wireless card but wireless cards and usb adapters are available at most electronic stores.

Second, you will need to be near one of our network locations or nodes. When searching for available wireless networks, the network name (SSID) will be “dfwfreenet“. No network key is required. (See map of our network locations/nodes.)

When you first connect to DFWFreeNet and try to browse the web, you will be presented with a splash page. This page gives a brief description of DFWFreeNet, the website address and a note about expanding the network. When you click continue, you will be directed to the website you were trying to access. This splash page will appear at the start of every connection and every 24 hours thereafter.

If you are within proximity of one of our network locations or nodes, consider hosting a repeater or gateway to help us extend our network.
